- Road Legal Vs Show Plates -

What Makes a Number Plate Road Legal?

Road-legal Number Plates must display the DVLA-issued registration number in a specific format, including a standard typeface, size, spacing and the DVLA's identity mark.

The only Gel Badge allowed on a Legal UK Number Plate is the UK Flag. Road legal Number Plates must be produced from Reflective material and affixed to the front and back of the vehicle.

Any adjustments to Road Legal Number Plates, such as changing the typeface, adjusting the spacing, or using non-standard materials, can result in fines or penalties. Road Legal Number Plates cannot be customised with slogans.

What makes a Number Plate a Show Plate?

Show Plates are primarily used for display and decorative purposes rather than Legal Identification, therefore they are not permitted for use on public roads.

Show Plates are often customised with unique designs, fonts, colours and messages chosen by the vehicle owner.

Custom Slogans are NOT Road Legal and therefore are only available to purchase on Show Plates.

Show Plates are commonly displayed on vehicles at car shows, exhibitions and private collections.

Show Plates are not recognised as valid forms of identification on public roads, and using them as such can result in fines.
